USCG Aux Saftey Course and Vessel Check
I highly recommend anyone interested in boating to take a safety course that the USCG Aux holds at various areas around the country. Here is a link to their courses and locations. The USCG Aux also does vessel safety checks for free. Here is a link to the Vessel Safety Check. It helps to have a second set of eyes look over your boat to ensure you're ready. And it MAY save some time during a USCG Inspection Boarding if you keep your completed VSC form on hand to show, though at their discretion they can continue with the inspection.
Here is a link to the USCG Auxiliary frequently requested boater information page. Some useful information for any boater.
With the new California Boater Laws going live, training and licensing is now mandatory. The course offered by the USCG Auxiliary qualifies for licensing.
